Dangerous Acts After Meal

Our every act makes our life beautiful, it's true if we careful about the below acts after meal.

1. Don’t smoke

Experiments from experts proves that smoking a cigarette after meal is comparable to smoking 10 cigarettes (chances of cancer is higher)

2. Don’t eat fruits immediately

Immediately eating fruits after meals will cause stomach to be bloated with air. There fore take fruits 1 -2 hours after meal or 1 hour before meal.

3. Don’t drink tea

Because tea leaves contain a high content of acid. This substance will cause the protein content in the food we consume to be hundred thus difficult to digest.

4. Don’t loosen your belt

Loosening the belt after meal will easily cause the intestine to be twisted and blocked.

5. Don’t bathe

Bathing after meal will cause the increase of blood flow to the hands, legs and body thus the amount of blood around the stomach will therefore decrease, this will weaken the digestive system in our stomach.

6. Don’t walk about

People always say that after a meal walk a hundred steps and you will live till 99. In actual fact this is not true. Walking will cause the digestive system to be unable to absorb the nutrition from the food we intake.

7. Don’t sleep immediately

The food we intake will not be to digest properly. Thus will lead to gastric and infection in our intestine.

Benefits to Mobile ERP

Mobile ERP applications @techrefer
Mobile ERP Applications
Emerging business are taking key decisions to roll out all current solutions from static to dynamic. ERP is the key solutions for any kind of business model to take quick decision making.

Mobile strategies are beginning to take form in the small-to-medium business ERP space. While mobile devices like laptops, PDAs, and tablets made it possible to work on the road, now workers can use their ERP applications on their mobile devices to take advantage of business capabilities and insights.

These mobile ERP applications allow companies to benefit from improved quality of service, greater productivity, deeper business relationships, competitive advantage, and more accurate data capture:

1) Improved Quality of Service
– Mobile ERP systems allow employees to improve quality of service to customers by giving them access to relevant information.

2) Greater Productivity
– Many mobile workers waste much time driving in cars or sitting in airports. Mobile ERP helps these workers use that time productively. All mobile workers have tools, materials and information to eliminate downtime.

3) Deeper Business Relationships
– Having information at their fingertips helps mobile workers deepen business relationships and response times.

4) Competitive Advantage
– The ability to deliver real-time information on-the-spot to accounts helps organizations improve their competitive advantage.

5) More Accurate Data Capture
– Mobile ERP software makes it easy for workers to enter all relevant data accurately as they gather it in the field without re-keying the data into back end systems (potentially making errors along the way).

Today, ERP leaders like Microsoft have started to develop mobile applications for reporting and dash-boarding to systems like Microsoft Dynamics GP and other mid-market ERP systems.

With mobile ERP, your mobile workers can take advantage of the functionality, data, and benefits of their ERP application not only in the office—but also on the road. Mobility will only become more and more prevalent in the workplace and organizations should choose a system that can scale with their business and also have the capability and flexibility to integrate with new technology solutions.

Networking Tools for your daily use

Networking Tools @techrefer
Networking Tools
Stop worrying about all your networking issues!

Yes, mentioned below tools are light weighted applications to diagnose and find better solutions for all your networking issues.

Looking for some network utilities? There are plenty of options, but don't waste time on the bulky and more heavyweight contenders, unless you really need them - our Tiny Tools may provide all you need.

If you'd like to find out what software is installed across your network, for instance, you could install some expensive commercial solution, complete with database, analytical tools and more. But we've found a 160KB program which will scan all your network PCs for no cost at all.

And capturing network traffic normally involves installing complex utilities, and a supporting library or two. But if you can get by with raw sockets then the 20KB RawCap will get you started in seconds.

This is just the start, though. Other tools in the list will help with performance issues, network management, security, file sharing and more. And they're all free, and very lightweight: even installing all ten will use less than 7MB hard drive space.

1. Network Stuff 3.0.9 - 1.34 MB

Network Stuff
Figuring out what's happening on your network normally involves a whole library of tools, yet somehow Network Stuff has managed to cram them all into a single portable application.
It's strong on the basics, for instance: the program can display your IP addresses (both local and external), scan your network for other systems, reveal MAC addresses and run graphical ping or traceroutes to the addresses you specify.

But Network Stuff can also display all the currently open network and internet connections; use built-in Whois and DNS tools to get more information on IP addresses; remotely wake up or shut down other systems on your network, and the list goes on.

The only problem here is complexity, as there's a lot to explore. If you get lost, though, check the author's website for some helpful guidance.

2. DNS Jumper 1.0.5 - 812KB

DNS Jumper
Changing your DNS settings can improve your online security, perhaps give you access to sites you couldn't reach otherwise, and improve your browsing speed. Windows doesn't exactly make this easy, but that's where DNS Jumper comes in.

This tiny tool comes with a lengthy list of DNS alternatives. If you're not sure which is best then it can test them all to find the fastest. When you're happy, it's able to apply your preferred DNS settings in a click, and the program can even back up and restore your original settings to avoid the chance of any problems.

3. RawCap 0.1.4.0 - 20KB

RawCap
Packet sniffing - capturing network traffic for later analysis - can be an invaluable way to diagnose tricky network problems, both hardware and software. And there are few easier ways to get the job done than with the super-lightweight RawCap.

The program is a command line tool, but it's also straightforward to run from Explorer. Just double-click the file, choose your network interface, enter an output file name, and that's it - the program will capture raw packets and save them in a .pcap file.

Unsurprisingly for a 20KB tool, there's no help here to analyse the finished results. Just opening the file in Notepad may be enough, though if you're looking for plain text. And there's no doubting RawCap's simplicity: it doesn't need any other components or DLLs beyond the .NET Framework 2.0.

4. Fast Software Audit 1.0.0 - 160 KB

Fast Software Audit
If you manage a PC network then you'll know it's important to keep track of the software your users are installing. You could check this manually, or invest in some big corporate inventory tool, but the ultra-compact Fast Software Audit - portable and only 160KB - could be enough. Just enter the network names of the computers you'd like to audit and it'll quickly scan them, revealing the list of installed applications. (Though please note, your systems will need the Remote Registry service to be running for this to work.)

5. CloseTheDoor 0.2.1 portable - 484 KB

CloseTheDoor
When you want to secure your network it's important to understand which processes are listening for connections, and the portable CloseTheDoor will tell you everything you want to know: the network interface, ports, protocols, process, related Windows services and a whole lot more.

All this information can seem baffling at first, but CloseTheDoor can help. Right-click something and you'll find options to search the web for useful information on the process, port and how it's generally used.

And if you do identify malware then CloseTheDoor can even shut down that process, though be careful - if you accidentally terminate something important then you might crash your PC.

6. BlueLife Hosts Editor 1.0 - 388KB

BlueLife Hosts Editor
The HOSTS file can be used to tell Windows the IP address of various network or Internet resources, so improving performance or allowing you to block some sites or resources entirely.
Windows doesn't make it particularly easy to access HOSTS, unfortunately, but the BlueLife Hosts Editor probably provides everything you'll need. Just launch the program to view your current HOSTS file, then add or remove entries to suit your needs, and save the results when you're finished: easy.

Beware, though, if you try to block a site you've just visited then it'll appear not to work, as Windows will cache the previous IP address. Save the new file, click "Flush DNS" and everything should now work just as you expect.

7. Network Activity Indicator 1.6 -1.03 MB

Network Activity Indicator
We often miss the old Windows XP network icon, where the monitors flashed to show network activity. But now there's an easy way to get it back. Install Network Activity Indicator and it'll immediately restore the same icon to your system tray. (Although Windows Vista/Windows 7 will often hide it again: click the arrow to the left of the system tray area, click Customize and set "Network Activity Indicator" to "Show icon and notifications to bring it back.)

This isn't just a cosmetic tool, though. You can also customise the program to flash only for particular network traffic (TCP, UDP, ICMP), or on specific network interfaces. And it's even able to provide details on network traffic (MB's uploaded and downloaded), and a host of useful statistics (open connections, failed connection attempts, errors received, more).

8. RemoteRebootX 2012 - 428KB

RemoteRebootX
Network management can be easier than you think. If you've got a copy of RemoteRebootX to hand, anyway.

Add the names of your network computers to the program, and in click or two you can then remotely shut them down or wake them up again, all from the comfort of your own PC.
You can even automate the process, for example having a PC woken up just after lunch so it's ready and waiting when you return.

And there are even system information options to, say, retrieve the free C: drive space on one of the systems, or its list of automatic but stopped services (very useful for troubleshooting). Not bad at all for a portable tool under 500KB in size.

9. HFS 2.2f - 560KB

HFS
When you want others on the network to be able to access your files then you'll probably start by sharing folders. But if you can't get that working as you like then setting up a web server with HFS could be a simpler approach.

There's no complex configuration involved, for instance - just run the program and it's ready to go.
Drag and drop the files you'd like to share and they'll be accessible within seconds.

And yet there are plenty more advanced options, if you need them. Worried about the program taking up all your bandwidth, for instance? Just limit the download speed to suit your requirements - it's all very easy.

10. Simple IP Config 2.3 - 1.32MB

Simple IP Config
If you regularly use a laptop on a couple of networks - home and work, say - then the chances are you probably waste a lot of time manually adjusting a host of low-level network settings. But it doesn't have to be that way.

Simple IP Config allows you to create separate network profiles for home, work, and anywhere else you like. Each of these can be used to store your IP Address, Subnet Mask, Gateway, DNS Server, and so on. And switching from one profile to another is as simple as selecting it, and clicking "Apply" - no messing around in Control Panel is required at all.

Why health insurance is essential?

Importance of Health Insurance @techrefer
Importance of Health Insurance
According to recent studies, healthcare costs have been rising at more than 20 per cent on an annualized basis. Also, out-of-the-pocket spending continues to be around 75 per cent of the total medical expenses. Given this increasing cost of medical care and treatment, it becomes essential that you have adequate health insurance cover to reduce the risk of financial difficulties in the event of a major illness or hospitalization. Even the government is getting into the act  to reduce the exorbitant out-of-pocket spending, hence it has been promoting low-cost health care plans.
COVERAGE

A health insurance policy covers the following basic costs in case of hospitalization due to any accidents/ diseases which doesn't form a part of the permanent exclusions of the policy

  1. Room, boarding expenses as provided by the hospital/ nursing home.
  2. Nursing expenses
  3. Surgeon, aneasthetist, medical practitioner, consultants, specialist fees
  4. Operation theatre charges, surgical appliance, medical and drugs, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and similar expenses.

EXCLUSIONS

The exclusions on a health insurance plan vary marginally company to company. What one should pay special attention to is whether pre-existing diseases or treatment for common but expensive treatments, such as cataract or hernia are covered.
The typical expenses that are not covered by a general health insurance policy are:
  • Any disease/injury during first 30 days of commencement of policy (except accidental injury)
  • Permanent exclusions could comprise of the following illnesses:
  • Vaccination, inoculation, change of life, cosmetic or aesthetic treatment, plastic surgery unless necessitated due to accident or as a part of any illness
  • Dental treatment or surgery of any kind unless requiring hospitalization
  • Cost of spectacles contact lenses and hearing aids
  • Convalescence, general debility, "run-down" condition, sterility, venereal disease, intentional self-injury, use of drugs and intoxicants
  • Hospital / nursing home charges not forming part of any treatment
  • Nuclear perils and war group of perils
  • Naturopathy or non-allopathic treatment
  • Any internal congenital illness
  • Pregnancy and childbirth related diseases
  • Expenses arising from HIV or AIDS and related diseases
  • Use or misuse of liquor, intoxicating substances or drugs as well as intentional self injury
  • War, riots, strike, terrorism acts, nuclear weapon induced treatment.

DOES AGE EFFECTS HEALTH INSURANCE PLANS AND PREMIUMS
Your age definitely affects your insurance plan in terms of coverage as well as cost. The older you are, the costlier your health insurance premiums.
As you grow older, your body becomes increasingly prone to illnesses, disorders, and malaise - hence the increased insurance premium costs.

TAX BENEFITS ON HEALTH INSURANCE
Premiums paid up to Rs. 15,000 per annul under the health insurance plan for self, spouse, two dependent children are exempt from tax under section 80 D of the Income Tax Act. Moreover you can also claim deduction up to Rs. 15,000 for premium paid towards dependent parents and in case your parents are senior citizen, you can claim a deduction of Rs. 20,000.

Health Insurance: Things must know

Health Insurance @techrefer
Health Insurance
There are certain things that every one must know before opting a health insurance policy. This article will cover basic information and points to remember, before singing health insurance coverage and policy agreement.

Things to find out about Mediclaim Policies

Renew-ability ?? Take policies that are renewable till your life time. After all if the policy does not get renewed beyond a certain age you will find it impossible to get a fresh policy on reaching that age. So go for policies that are renewable till lifetime.

Sub-limits  - Ignore policies that have a room rent sub-limit as it can seriously impact the amount that you get paid for every hospitalization.

Disease specific amount Sub-limits - Be aware that most policies have specific sub-limits for treatments such as cataract, knee or hip replacement etc.

Specific Expenses Sub-limits - Apart from room rent sub-limit covered above (avoid policies that have room rent sub limit) and please be aware that some policies also have expense sub-limits on items such as medicines and doctors?? fees.

Waiting periods - Be aware that most mediclaim policies will not pay hospitalization expenses for any pre-existing disease for a period of between 1-4 years. The exclusion will also apply for any hospitalization due to a disease that was a consequence of the pre-existing disease.

Co-payments - Be aware that the policy can require you to pay a portion of the ??eligible?? expenditure from your side. This is called co-payment in insurance parlance. The co-payment is normally conditional such as after reaching a certain age or for hospitalization expenses incurred for a pre-existing disease or for hospitalisation expenses incurred outside the preferred network of the insurance company.

Type of rooms - Also there are some policies will restrict the type of room (normally twin sharing room) that you can get yourself admitted to for the purpose of getting treatment. If you choose a higher category room there could probably be a co-payment imposed or the expenses would be reimbursed based on what you would have incurred if you had stayed in a twin sharing room. The second type of conditions can seriously curtail the amount of claim that you can make and you should avoid policies that have such conditions.

Which Zone can I be treated in?

Some policies will restrict the geographical parts of India that you can be treated in. If you choose to get treated in another part of India that has a higher premium there is normally a co-payment that is imposed.

Things you should not worry about

Medical examination before the policy is issued

This is in fact good for you. Coupled with complete disclosure from your side this will ensure that you have the least problems at the time of making a claim. All insurance companies will reimburse 50% of the medical examination cost if they agree to issue the policy to you.

Coverage of Pregnancy

Only a few policies cover this and that too after a waiting period of 4-6 years after taking the policy. The amount of expenditure covered is also limited to 15-50 thousand depending on the type of delivery.

Things that you should definitely do

Make complete disclosures including any history of past diseases or treatment. It is better to have a more expensive policy or even not to have a policy rather than get a policy by hiding facts which will make the policy useless when a claim arises.

Read Brochure of the policy carefully before signing on the dotted line.
Check out all the things that are listed above.

Health Insurance: Different types of coverage

Health Insurance @techrefer
Health Insurance
This is one insurance policy where only the most fortunate person will not make a claim during his life time. Most of us will, unfortunately, be required to be hospitalized some time or the other and will need a health insurance policy to take care of the hospitalization expenses.

Which one and what is the difference?

1) The most common policy is the Hospitalization expenses reimbursement policy or "mediclaim" policy as it is commonly known. This will reimburse "eligible" expenses incurred while hospitalized for treatment of any illness or disease or due to an accident. The policy normally does not cover expenses incurred outside the hospital even if they are quite high such as expenses for tests, doctor's visits while not hospitalized or medicines during that period unless it leads to hospitalization in 30-90 days or is a result of hospitalization in the prior 30-90 days. Expenses on elective treatments such as cosmetic surgery, obesity, etc. are also not covered. There is a long list of other permanent exclusions but in the interest of simplicity they are not being given here.

2) There are policies that pay a lump sum if you contract a serious illness/disease such as Cancer, stroke, organ failure, etc. This amount is payable when the condition is diagnosed and you survive a fixed period after the diagnosis. This type of policy is popularly called a "critical illness" policy and it is supposed to be used to create a corpus to generate income to replace the loss of income that normally occurs after such condition is diagnosed and fortunately you survive. Critical Illness Policies  are in addition to and not a substitute for mediclaim policies.

3) There is a 3rd kind of policy which pays a fixed sum of money for every day spent in the hospital. This kind of policy is called daily cash allowance policy and is again a supplement to and not a replacement for a Mediclaim policy

4) Another kind of policy pays a larger fixed lump amount if you have to incur any of the surgeries listed in the policy. This policy is suitable only for those people who are unable to get regular Mediclaim policies and would like to at least get some protection against surgical costs.

Insurance: a Small Business Owner Should Have

Business Insurance @techrefer
Business Insurance for every one
1. General Liability Insurance: Every business, even if home-based, needs to have liability insurance.  The policy provides both defense and damages if you, your employees or your products or services cause or are alleged to have caused Bodily Injury or Property Damage to a third party.

2. Property Insurance:  If you own your building or have business personal property, including office equipment, computers, inventory or tools you should consider purchasing a policy that will protect you if you have a fire, vandalism, theft, smoke damage etc.  You may also want to consider business interruption/loss of earning insurance as part of the policy to protect your earnings if the business is unable to operate.

3. Business owner’s policy (BOP): A business owner policy packages all required coverage a business owner would need. Often, BOP’s will include business interruption insurance, property insurance, vehicle coverage, liability insurance, and crime insurance . Based on your company’s specific needs, you can alter what is included in a BOP. Typically, a business owner will save money by choosing a BOP because the bundle of services often costs less than the total cost of all the individual coverage’s.

4. Commercial Auto Insurance: Commercial auto insurance protects a company’s vehicles. You can protect vehicles that carry employees, products or equipment. With commercial auto insurance you can insure your work cars, SUVs, vans and trucks from damage and collisions.  If you do not have company vehicles, but employees drive their own cars on company business you should have non-owned auto liability to protect the company in case the employee does not have insurance or has inadequate coverage.  Many times the non-owned can be added to the BOP policy.

5. Worker’s Compensation: Worker’s compensation provides insurance to employees who are injured on the job. This type of insurance provides wage replacement and medical benefits to those who are injured while working. In exchange for these benefits, the employee gives up his rights to sue his employer for the incident. As a business owner, it is very important to have worker’s compensation insurance because it protects yourself and your company from legal complications. State laws will vary, but all require you to have workers compensation if you have W2 employees.  Penalties for non-compliance can be very stiff.

6. Professional Liability Insurance: this type of insurance is also known as Errors and Omissions Insurance. The policy provides defense and damages for failure to or improperly rendering professional services.  Your general liability policy does not provide this protection, so it is important to understand the difference.   Professional liability insurance is applicable for any professional firm including lawyers, accountants, consultants, notaries, real estate agents, insurance agents, hair salons and technology providers to name a few..

7. Directors and Officers Insurance: this type of insurance protects the directors and officers of a company against their actions that affect the profitability or operations of the company. If a director or officer of your company, as a direct result of their actions on the job, finds him or herself in a legal situation, this type of insurance can cover costs or damages lost as a result of a lawsuit.

8. Data Breach:  If the business stores sensitive or non-public information about employees or clients on their computers, servers or in paper files they are responsible for protecting that information.  If a breach occurs either electronically or from a paper file a Data Breach policy will provide protection against the loss.

9. Homeowner’s Insurance: Homeowner’s insurance is one of the most important kinds of insurance you need. This type of insurance can protect against damage to the home and against damage to items inside the home. Additionally, this type of insurance may protect you from accidents that happen at home or may have occurred due to actions of your own.

10. Renter’s Insurance: Renter’s insurance is a sub-set of homeowner’s insurance which applies only to those whose who rent their home. The coverage is protects against damage to the physical property, contents of the property, and personal injury within the home.

11. Life Insurance: Life insurance protects an individual against death. If you have life insurance, the insurer pays a certain amount of money to a beneficiary upon your death. You pay a premium in exchange for the payment of benefits to the beneficiary. This type of insurance is very important because it allows for peace of mind. Having life insurance allows you to know that your loved ones will not be burdened financially upon your death.

12. Personal Automobile Insurance: Another very important type of insurance is auto insurance. Automobile insurance covers all road vehicles (trucks, cars, motorcycles, etc.). Auto insurance has a dual function, protecting against both physical damage and bodily injury resulting from a crash, and also any liability that might rise from the collision.

13. Personal Umbrella Insurance: You may want some additional coverage, on top of insurance policies you already have. This is where personal umbrella insurance comes into play. This type of insurance is an extension to an already existing insurance policy and covers beyond the regular policy. This insurance can cover different kinds of claims, including homeowner’s or auto insurance. Generally, it is sold in increments of $1 million and is used only when liability on other policies has been exhausted.

Online Places to Sell Your Handmade Creations

Handmade Creations @techrefer
Handmade Creations

Are you looking for best places to sell your handmade/homemade products. Your will be knowing few sites today and places where you can sell your products.

The word “handmade” evokes feelings of warmth, of comfort, of craftsmanship.

Amazon and eBay are certainly well known marketplaces among those looking to sell just about anything, but niche marketplaces and communities are growing quickly. These 29 Marketplaces offer a way to buy and sell handmade goods.

Etsy is probably one of the best-known marketplaces for artisans and craftpeople of all types. You’ll find new and vintage goods on Etsy. You will find curated lists by category or topic as well as a directory of local shops in your area. They have an excellent blog with deeper topics, such as The Value of Home Economics and other topics you might not expect to find in an online marketplace.

ArtFire is a well-known indie marketplace with a great community feel to it.  Another feature that really stood out for me: you can place an item on your Amazon wishlist. The fact that ArtFire tied into Amazon’s Universal Wishlist technology is a brilliant move.

Supermarket offers an elegantly simple marketplace. They don’t offer every category under the sun, but four meta ones: everything, wear + carry, space + place, and paper + prints.  You’ll see photos of items on the home page; clicking that item takes you into a designer’s store. It is a clean and simple structure including a directory of designers.

eCrater is both a free Web store builder and an online marketplace. If you are a seller, you can create your own free online store in minutes. You can also import an eBay store into eCrater. If you are a buyer, you can browse and search millions of products.

Craftly is one of those hot, new startups that earns points for online marketing savvy. It’s online marketplace meets Kickstarter (the crowdfunding site), but for artists and craftspeople. The site is just getting started, but holds promise as a great place to test the market before you start making your product on a bigger scale.

Free Craft Fair is less a marketplace and more of a Yahoo-type directory. Still, it serves a purpose for those looking to get in front of craft buyers.

Handmade Artists’ Shop is a combination of marketplace and community forum. If you are looking for a collection of artists and craftspeople learning from one another, this forum might provide some useful help.

Folksy is a U.K.-based handmade goods marketplace. With everything from books to jewelry to soap, Folksy has plenty for sale. But they also have a Make magazine-style do-it-yourself section.

ShopWindoz (a German site) is for creatives of all types who are turning exciting ideas into unique products outside the mainstream. ShopWindoz gives designers and artists the opportunity to become shop owners and sell their products online to a global audience.

Notmassproduced is a do-it-for-you type of model.  You set up your store,  pricing and shipping, but they handle everything else. They manage the sales process, you ship to the customer, they pay you from the Notmassproduced service. Each vendor is selected to be on the site, so it validates each artisan to assure a match. U.K. and Europe focus.

Misi is a U.K. online craft marketplace. Sellers get a “free for life” shop including a subdomain. They have a forum to help you get your business started or to advance your marketing skills, for example. There is a low commission on sold items.

Coriandr is a fun U.K.-based marketplace for buying and selling handmade gifts. It has an easy-to-set-up storefront and some enthusiastic marketing materials and badges to drive people to your store. I like their gifts under £20 section (conceptually because it drives people to a bargain area in this crazy  economy). They even have a “mini shop” idea that lets you embed a store quickly into your own blog or website.

Dawanda takes an interesting approach that lets buyers create unique collections of products and share them with their friends. If you are a seller of handmade or unique products, this marketplace is well organized and looks seller-friendly.

SpoonFlower is one of my favorite discoveries for local, handmade products from artisans. They focus on fabric and make it possible for individuals to design, print and sell their own fabric designs. As many readers know, I love to find entrepreneurs who dig deep into a niche and do something no one else is doing. Spoonflower is precisely that. If you’re looking for fabrics or looking to sell them, try Spoonflower.

Zibbet looks pretty competitive with no listing fees, no commission fees and a free level account. What’s not to like about that? They have an Etsy importer, too, if you’re leaving that service.

I Made It Market is a nomadic indie crafts marketplace that provides opportunities for artists to bring their wares to market. They do it by partnering with community, arts and nonprofit organizations to raise funds and awareness to assist them in improving communities. Artists and craftspeople apply to be part of live events.

PoppyTalk Handmade is a monthly online street market curated by Poppytalk to showcase, buy and sell handmade goods of emerging design talent from around the world. The key word here is “curated” as PoppyTalk finds and accepts only certain merchants for its storefront. But the Buy button on this curated site drives the buyer back to your existing online storefront, whether it is your own, Etsy or another marketplace. They have won a number of awards for best blog and best site.

iCraft is for original handmade products, not vintage, not for resellers and not for food products. In fact, they are very, very specific about what they accept in their marketplace and it is actually refreshing to see such clarity. It may not be for everyone, but you will know if you fit or not. The pricing structure seems to resonate for lots of artisans.

Silk Fair allows you to have a free Market Booth on their marketplace or to build a full-fledged custom online store with their Web-based software. You can appear in the marketplace and as your own independent store.

Bonanza has been cited as the best alternative to eBay and Etsy. They have free listings and low fees. And something that caught my eye was their emphasis on having live humans available for sales consultations — to help you sell more — at no cost.

Made It Myself is a free marketplace where you can list your products for sale. It is still in beta and looks to be a rapidly growing community and handmade artisan service.

eBay has a special fair-trade marketplace that is worth mentioning. World of Good is a marketplace dedicated to socially and environmentally responsible shopping, featuring tens of thousands of stylish and unique products from around the world, and all backed by the eBay name.

Mymela is a marketplace for arts and crafts from India. It is a combination of ecommerce storefront and micro-finance in that buyers or consumers can also donate or make a small loan to an aspiring merchant. They call it Integrated Micro Advance Funding and it works slightly differently than traditional micro-finance.

Renegade Craft is not a directory or online marketplace, but a cool bunch of craft fairs around the world. Worth a look.

If you make or sell food items, check out the following:

Foodoro is a marketplace for artisanal food that connects passionate Foodmakers directly with consumers.. If you’re a food producer, this is an online storefront technology worth checking out.

Foodzie has a very cool model: They are not your traditional online marketplace and appear to take a commission on successful sales. So, if they are not successful in helping you sell more, it looks like you don’t pay anything. They help passionate small food producers and farmers across the U.S. reach new customers and connect directly to foodies searching for wonderful foods and gifts.

LocalHarvest is an organic and local food website. They offer a definitive and reliable directory of small farms, farmers markets and other local food sources around the nation.

Fooducopia is a marketplace for indie food producers and small scale farmers. You can open a store on their marketplace and they help do the heavy lifting, so to speak, of helping you sell and market your goods.

Freelancer and Virtual Assistant Outsourcing Sites

Virtual Assistance for Business @techrefer
Virtual Assistant
If you know you need help in marketing, in technology (think programming) or with  administrative issues, but really don’t know how to get help, this review is for you. It is for small business owners that want to find contractors, not employees, who can work locally or remotely to get the job done.

For many jobs, you need a full-time employee, but for some projects and tasks you can get work done faster and more cost-effectively with an independent contractor.  Each of these services offers a way to get a job done through a contract, and they often offer 1099 tax services, too.  Unless otherwise noted, none of these sites charge a fee to list a job or project opportunity or to look for a freelancer.

Guru.com is one of my favorite outsourcing services, hands down. I’ve been using it for years and still have two great virtual assistants that I use via their service.  I find it fast and easy to use.  Guru.com handles your 1099 tax service and let you pull reports on who you paid and when.

Elance is another service I’ve used and really like.  If you already manage a variety of contractors, their business solutions package is worth a serious look.  It is a contractor management tool that lets you automate invoicing and payments.

TaskArmy is well organized.  I really like how they organize and showcase their freelancers (via portfolios).  Beyond the standard “how it works” type button, they have very specific calls to action for those trying to get their heads wrapped around outsourcing.  This is one of the buttons above the fold:  “Start with a small task: One of our freelancers will find the contact details of 30 bloggers in your niche for $5.”  Great suggestion, and I’m sure lots of business owners give it a try for that small fee.

oDesk is another of the heavy hitters in outsourcing and freelancer communities.  The site is easy to navigate and also has robust contractor management tools. As with the others, you can post a job and keep it private to only those you invite to the bidding process.
Rent a Coder is the place to go if you need a tech person. Need that Facebook or iPhone app built? This is the place to post.

TaskRabbit is a terrific concept in the freelance, temporary and outsourcing marketplace.  Instead of focusing on remote workers, they focus on local people in your area who will do small and large projects.  Need your drycleaning picked up? Or maybe you need a desk built and a computer set up?  TaskRabbit vets each person on the service and then matches you with the right person. You post your task; they find someone nearby who can do it.  The big downside is TaskRabbit is currently only in six major cities.

Freelancer.com is one of the largest outsourcing marketplaces for small business. The site touts “over 2,753,810 employers and freelancers globally from over 234 countries and regions.”The average job is just $200. From coding to writing, they have a wide range of skill sets available.
ScriptLance is another great outsourcing company if you want to focus on computer programming and need tech help.

It might surprise you to see Craigslist here, but despite some risks in payment (meaning there is no escrow service like most of these Web services), you can still find some great people locally. It is a convenient and easy place for people to look for and receive work. That’s both a positive and a negative.

Amazon Mechanical Turk is a marketplace for work that entails what they call a “human intelligence task.”  I’ve used Turk a fair number of times and if you don’t mind managing a lot of details, for simple research or data collection it can’t be beat.  If you want to use it and really make it sing, then you have to use Smartsheet.  You’ll pay a little premium to use the online project management tool, but it is worth it.

I’ve used it for tasks such as cleaning  data, collecting website information and phone numbers, categorizing items, creating and moderating content, or getting relevant feedback, such as product feedback.  Feedback Army, which I’ve mentioned in other posts, is built upon Turk.  You need to like spreadsheets, though, if you’re going to do it all yourself.

PeoplePerHour.com caught my eye because it is one of the first sites I’ve seen to have a Facebook or LinkedIn login process.  Like the other services here, they make it easy to post a job and start receiving bids right away. The average job gets approximately 16 bids.

Webinar and Webcast Tools for Online Meetings and Marketing

Webinar and Webcast Tools @techrefer
Webinars and Webcast
It’s hard to talk about marketing to a group these days with all the one-to-one focus of social media. You might engage on a mass level, but experts advise you to “engage the individual.” This is timely and good advice. But it puts webcasts, webinars, and online seminars in a “past their prime” bucket, for some.  Don’t discount the method yet, lots of people still like to connect with companies and brands in a good old fashioned (in web years) webinar. This review is for the business owner considering a broadcast type campaign.

AnyMeeting (formerly Freebinar from the last list) is mentioned again because it has done so many positive updates that I view it as a new company. Of course, that’s just my perception and the company hasn’t really changed in its core offering that much. They still have screen sharing, social media integrations, and event management tools (sell tickets). Best of all, it is completely free.

MeetingBurner is a popular webinar provider with a great set of tools. They have a forever free account with no ads for up to 15 people. You can’t record your webinar on that plan, but you can do a bunch of things for free with them that you can’t do with others. For example, you can change presenters, manage chat, and modify your registration page. The pro plan is $39.95/month for up to 50 and lets you record and lots more. Compare their plans here.

Watchitoo is terrific whether you want to livestream or collaborate in real time via video. The feature that caught my attention was this: “With one click of the mouse, the a meeting host can drag a user out of the audience and bring them streaming live into the meeting to collaborate with the group.” That’s pretty cool. I didn’t see a free trial option, but the pricing starts at $39/month.

Mikogo might be the ideal solution for small teams on a small budget. Their online meeting product starts at $13/month for up to 3 participants. You can join from any browser. They support 35 languages. And I really liked that you could create a page on your own website and embed their code so your customers can join a session right from your website.

JoinMe is a robust screen sharing application. They don’t have a recording feature, but the free version gives you a quality way of interacting with up to 250 people. You can view from iOS and Android devices, too. Pro version is $19/month.

Instant Presenter is packed with useful features that make them ideal for small businesses with focused small webinar plans. It is $39/month for up to 25 attendees. You can record, custom brand the look and feel, upload files, and more.

ClickWebinar offers a clean looking interface and service starting at $40 a month with a 30-day free trial. They have some powerful chat features that can help you moderate the conversation in a webinar.

HearMe offers online meeting rooms for small business. I found them when searching for video conferencing through their parent company: PalTalk which hosts video chat rooms. They have a 14-day free trial, then start at $29/month for 5 attendees.

YuuGuu is an easy web conferencing tool to share your screen. You can share with up to 30 attendees for $99/year. It also have a free audio conferencing service with dial-in numbers in 15 different countries.

Spreed is free for up to 3 participants and lets you record on that plan. It is feature-rich for small teams, in my view, and their live whiteboard options make it one to consider. As I understand it, you can share a PDF, annotate it, and save that PDF again with all the brainstorming intact.  Plans start at $199/year.

Glance is one of my favorites. As a screen sharing tool, you can create a real-time meeting room for up to 100 attendees. They don’t offer webinar recording, however, they suggest a few recording tools in their support FAQ section. They have a free 7-day trial and I love that they offer a day pass option for $9.95.  It is a light and fast application, too.

eZmeeting offers live, interactive meetings that let you connect peer-to-peer rather than through a central server. Participants can collaborate with you and your document or file — including 3D files (useful for designer and CAD types). 7-Day free trial, then $99/month for up to 4 participants.

BeamYourScreen is another great feature-packed desktop sharing and webinar platform.  From sales presentations to online meetings to IT remote support, you can quickly share your screen (and record it in a proprietary format). You can change presenters and integrate your logo into the sharing screen. I didn’t see a free trial, but pricing starts at approximately $240/year (site pricing shows in Euros).

TeamViewer caught my eye because it isn’t primarily a web-based solution. You download a full version of the software with a lifetime license (Business version is $749 for up to 25 attendees), but that means no recurring fees. It is an all-in-one program.  If you are a non-commercial user, it’s free. There is a web-based viewer for those who don’t want to download the full program.

Skype is known mostly as a free VOIP (voice over internet protocol) phone company, but they have a rich feature set for both consumers and business owners. They have a screen sharing option and group video calls on their premium plan for $59.88/year. I’m a huge Skype fan and use it on a daily basis, but have not used the group video option yet.

Google Hangouts is the last one I’m going to add to the list. It is not officially a webinar or webcast solution, but it does offer an affordable way for up to nine people to gather in real time. If you want to test it in creative ways, you could gather people into a “hangout” virtual room, complete with webcams running for each, and engage with your group. I have not seen any recording options, but you could capture the entire screen with something like Camtasia. The audio might overload your senses though since anyone can speak at any time. If you are already a Google+ user, then you can see the details on the far right column when you are in the plus dashboard.

Web based Accounting Software Tools To Make Finances Easy

Accounting is the most powerful exercise for your business entity and to get clear financial status of the growing business.

NolaPro has an online solution, in addition to its Windows and Linux desktop versions. Web-based plans start at $9.99/month, but the desktop version is free. You can add a payroll module for $35. CNET shows it has over 100,000 downloads and is rated #6 in accounting and billing software. However, the CNET list where they are #6 has a bunch of other types of software on it, so they may be #1 in accounting.

Connected Core Accounting appears to be Mac-centric, but PC-capable. The website explains that you can have a Mac based business on the front end (let’s say you run a design firm) but cross-platform capabilities so you can talk to your customer service or accounting departments where PC’s rule. Your PC users, including an outside accountant, can use Connected on a Windows computer at the same time as your Mac users, with identical features and information shared. Software starts at $399 and you can download a free trial.

Sage 50: Most business owners have heard of Intuit’s QuickBooks, but Peachtree is equally well known. It is now called Sage 50. This is the package that many businesses choose when they know they are going to scale up and need a full enterprise resource planning solution (ERP). It does accounting, but the core of it revolves around integration of other software, over time usually. The base package starts at $269 for one user. 30-day free trial download.

Sage One is the cloud offering of Sage 50 (more or less) and at $29/mo (after the 30-day free trial), you are running a full featured business management program, including accounting, project management, and collaboration functions. When you consider that the Sage 50 Complete package (1-5 users) is $369, this may be a viable option.

AccountEdge is accounting for Windows, Mac, and mobile. The basic Mac package is only $99, but the full Mac and Windows versions are $299. The iOS mobile version is free and synchronizes, via DropBox, with the desktop version. They offer free trial versions of each.

Wave Accounting is free. Lots of Web-based accounting providers offer a free trial or a light free version, but Wave is totally free. No limits. They do this with an ad-supported model they call Business Savings. Inside Wave, you’ll see “savings offers” from companies like Amex, Staples, Dell, Moo and others. These companies are paying Wave a sponsor fee, or an advertisement that is akin to a coupon, but this is how Wave maintains a free and powerful accounting app for your small business.

Kashoo has an award-winning iPad app that caught my attention. Their Web-based version gets high marks, too. I had heard about the company, but thought they were focused on invoicing only. I was wrong. They are a full-fledged accounting software package, in the cloud. They have a free version that is limited to 20 transactions per month, but that works well for many microbusiness owners. Paid plans start at $16/month.

Zoho is a popular cloud-based office solution and they have an accounting software tool called Zoho Books. It starts at $24/mo for two users. It recently added a feature so you can pull in your bank and credit card statements automatically. And I like that they have an Aging summary high in the dashboard so you can see the age of your invoices and which ones are overdue.

Open Source Accounting

Edoceo Imperium does accounting, but bills itself as business management software, so you’ll see additional functions in it. Linux-based only. GnuCash is free accounting software tool with installs for the major operating systems (OS).

Gnu allows you to import QIF files, too. TurboCash is based in South Africa, but it works anywhere, of course. Like many open source players, the software itself is free, but support is not. They have over 80,000 users. LedgerSMB is an open source accounting and ERP program which offers businesses accounting, plus the ability to manage their operations, track money, inventory, and more.

Sending a Fax Via the Internet with eFax

Sending a fax via internet @techrefer
efax

There are still a fair number of businesses that use fax as their primary means of communication. The fax machine may be going the way of the dinosaur, but faxing is still going on, oddly enough.  eFax is on top of these trends and that’s why they keep diversifying to keep up with the digital marketplace.

eFax allows you to send and receive faxes around the world from Word without using a fax machine or all-in-one printer. It is one of the top online fax service for professionals, boasting 11 million users. This cloud-based app is easy to download and only requires an Internet connection to work.

As you can see in this dashboard image, it is pretty straightforward. Just below what you see in this screenshot for my trial account is a spot to add a cover page and also attach a file as the fax itself.

What I Really Like

  • You can use a fax machine from anywhere with any Internet accessible device, including your phone. For the small business owner on the go, it keeps you from being tied to your office while waiting for a fax.
  • I like that they keep watching the market and adding features. I like that they are on top of mobile.
  • It allows you to sign faxes and other documents digitally. Instead of printing, signing, and scanning, you can just drag and drop.
  • When you need to send a file that will not attach to an email because it is too large, you can send it through eFax. They have a partnership with FuseMail. It is nice to the option of fax and large email attachments, especially when you are traveling.

What I’d Like to See

  • I would like to see them offer a free trial.  They used to have one and discontinued it.
  • They should not charge fees for faxes that do not go through.
  • A bigger value proposition between the Plus and Pro plans (currently only 50 extra pages).
Just because they seem to be increasingly rare, doesn’t mean you won’t need a fax machine or service from time to time.
As additional proof of the need, as I was finishing this article, my wife said, “Can we fax something from that multifunction inkjet?” When I asked why, she said that a bank confirmed that we had to fax in our document. I told her I had a temporary trial with eFax and we could use it for a test.
So there’s  one more bit of proof that the fax machine has not totally gone extinct. When you do need a service, you’ll want to take a closer look at eFax and its useful service.
